About this dive site

This dive site, Sha'ab Maksur, is a large reef system in the Red Sea, similar in structure to the renowned Elphinstone Reef. It features two main plateaus, one to the north and one to the south, both generously adorned with vibrant soft and fan corals. Divers will find drop-offs on either side of the reef, offering stunning wall dives. A smaller lagoon is located on the west side of the mid-reef area. Navigation is generally straightforward, following the reef's structure and utilizing the lagoon as a potential reference point.

The abundant marine life is a major draw. Divers can expect to encounter a wide range of species, including sharks (various species), manta rays, moray eels, blue spotted stingrays, anthias, scorpionfish, clownfish (Nemo), nudibranchs, lionfish, and various other reef fish. The coral itself supports a diverse ecosystem of invertebrates and smaller organisms.

The best time to visit Sha'ab Maksur is during the warmer months (typically April to November) when water temperatures are ideal and visibility is at its peak. However, currents can be more prevalent during this period. Freedivers should exercise caution and only attempt dives within their skill level, paying close attention to current conditions. Divers should also be aware of potential depth changes and the need for appropriate buoyancy control. Overall, Sha'ab Maksur provides an exhilarating dive experience.
