About this dive site
Discover a captivating and surreal snorkeling spot at the former Sofitel Heiva resort on Huahine. Often referred to as "Huahine's Coral Garden," this site offers a unique blend of man-made history and vibrant natural life. While the overwater bungalows themselves have been removed, their concrete bases and the remnants of the pontoon walkways remain, providing a dramatic, otherworldly backdrop for your underwater exploration.
The snorkeling here is best at the coral garden, which is located on the edge of the pass that separates the main island from Motu Mahare. Be aware that a fairly strong current can be present, so it's often recommended for intermediate snorkelers. A good tip is to enter the water at the far end of the beach and let the current carry you toward the old pontoon.
The underwater world here is surprisingly rich. While the strong current has prevented the growth of spectacular, large coral formations, you'll find a patchwork of hard corals teeming with life. Keep an eye out for Giant Clams nestled in the reef and the Orangefin Anemonefish, the only clownfish species found in French Polynesia. You may also encounter other common species such as butterflyfish, moray eels, pufferfish, and triggerfish. This spot is a fascinating glimpse into how a man-made structure can be transformed into a thriving marine habitat.
