About this dive site

This dive site, La Franata del Castello, is located near the Ruffo Castle of Scilla, offering a unique blend of historical and natural beauty. The dive begins around the castle's rock cliffs, descending into a landscape of small canyons and inlets. Navigation is straightforward, following the rocky formations and sandy patches down to around 22-25 meters before reaching the maximum depth of 26 meters. The dive site's proximity to the castle adds an interesting element, allowing divers to explore both the underwater and terrestrial aspects of Scilla's history.

The marine life here is abundant and varied, reflecting the typical biodiversity of the Mediterranean Sea. Divers can expect to see a variety of fish, including sea breams and blue fish, alongside invertebrates such as nudibranchs and mollusks. The rocks are covered with algae, sponges, anthozoans, and hydrozoans, creating a vibrant and colorful underwater scene. The expansive white sand area around the landslide offers a contrast to the rocky sections and provides a different photographic opportunity.

The best time to visit is during the warmer months (spring and summer) when the water is clearest and the marine life is most active. Moderate currents are possible; however, this site is generally suitable for both scuba divers and freedivers with adequate experience. Strong currents are not typical. Divers and freedivers should be comfortable navigating in varied terrain and depths; always maintain awareness and appropriate safety procedures for your chosen activity level.
