About this dive site

This dive site is located at Scoglio dell'Eremita, a small islet off the coast of Polignano a Mare in Italy. The dive follows the north-facing wall of the islet, starting close to the surface and gradually descending to a maximum depth of 19 meters. The dive is relatively straightforward, following the natural contours of the wall. Navigation is easy as the wall itself provides a clear reference point. The site's name, "Eremita" (hermit), suggests a historical connection, perhaps to a hermitage once located on the island, though further historical research would be needed to verify this.

The underwater landscape teems with life. The abundant colorful nudibranchs are a highlight, joined by moray eels, octopuses, croakers, and various other fish species. The presence of numerous cannabinoid axinellas (a type of sponge) helps divers navigate the site. The wall itself provides a beautiful backdrop for underwater photography, showcasing a variety of textures and colors.

The best time to visit is likely during the warmer months (spring and summer) when water visibility is typically best and the sea is calmer. While generally suitable for freediving, divers should be mindful of potential depth variations and check the sea conditions before entering the water. Experienced freedivers can explore deeper sections of the wall, while beginners can stay in the shallower areas, enjoying the rich biodiversity. A good dive guide is recommended for those unfamiliar with the area, further enhancing safety and maximizing the enjoyment of this diverse dive site.
