About this dive site

This dive site, Kuroshima South, is situated on the southern side of Kuroshima in the Kerama Islands. It is renowned for its vibrant coral reefs. While currents can sometimes be present, divers can often stay in more sheltered areas, making it accessible for beginners. There is no specific historical background provided for this site. Along the reef, schools of fusiliers (gurukun) and anthias gather. The site is home to various anemonefish species like saddleback, pink skunk, and common anemonefish, as well as star-spot damsels, butterflyfish, trumpetfish, lionfish, and banded sea snakes. Whitetip reef sharks are also present. During the manta season, pelagic manta rays can be observed feeding at the surface, though green sea turtle encounters are low. The best time to visit Kuroshima South for manta ray sightings is typically from October to November. This site is suitable for both scuba diving and freediving due to its shallow average depth and marine life. Snorkelers can also enjoy the beautiful coral and reef fish from the surface. Divers should be mindful of potential currents, though calmer areas are usually available.
