About this dive site

This dive site, Deep Sponge - 2 Mile Reef, is located approximately 500 meters seaward of Two Mile Reef in South Africa. It's characterized by a relatively flat reef that slopes gently down before dropping off to a depth of around 30 meters, forming a slight wall. Navigating the site involves following the sloping reef, paying attention to depth, and being aware of potential currents. There's no known history or specific story behind the name other than the presence of large vase-like sponges, which is the defining feature.

The marine life at Deep Sponge is quite diverse. The huge vase sponges are a highlight, along with soft corals covering much of the seabed. Divers can expect to see turtles, potato bass, and large schools of fish. The area may also attract other larger pelagic species depending on the season.

The best time to visit is likely during the warmer months (spring and summer) when water temperatures are most comfortable and visibility is often best. Divers should be experienced and comfortable with deeper dives and potential currents. Freediving is not recommended due to the depth and conditions. Always check weather and sea conditions before venturing out and make sure your dive equipment is suitable for the colder water temperatures.
