Duiker Island

About this dive site

This dive site, known locally as Seal Island due to its resident seal colony, is a relatively shallow dive located off the coast of South Africa. The dive site is characterized by granite boulders and outcrops scattered across the seabed, creating a varied and interesting underwater landscape. Navigation is straightforward, primarily consisting of exploring the rock formations and kelp forests. There is no significant history beyond the attraction of the seal colony, making it a popular spot for both experienced and novice divers.

The abundant kelp forests support a diverse array of marine life. Expect to see various fish species, including smaller reef fish and possibly larger species attracted to the kelp. Seals are the main attraction, often seen playing and resting near the rocks. While it is a rock-dominated ecosystem, there may be some invertebrates and smaller crustaceans present amongst the rocks and kelp.

The best time to visit is during the warmer months (September to May) when the water is warmer and visibility is generally better. However, the seals are present year-round. For freedivers, the shallow depth and calm conditions make it an excellent location for shallower explorations. Divers should be aware of potential swell, so checking conditions beforehand is recommended. Be mindful and respectful of the seals and their habitat and maintain a safe distance.
