Protea Banks Northern Shark Caves

This dive site is located in the Northern Part of Protea Banks, a renowned reef system known for its consistent shark populations. The area offers a unique diving experience, primarily explored during winter months. It features several large caverns called the Northern Caves, which serve as pathways for divers exploring the reef's interior. The dive typically begins at the First Cave and progresses through the Swim Through and Second Cave before a slow ascent and drift with the current. Expect dive times around 45 minutes and depths reaching approximately 36 meters at its deepest points. Currents can be strong, requiring experienced divers to navigate safely; therefore, always dive with a Dive Master and enjoy the natural drift. Protea Banks is famous for hosting Ragged Tooth Sharks from May to December, often in large numbers exceeding 150 individuals. Zambezi (Bull) Sharks and Blacktips are also regularly observed year-round, while Tiger Sharks visit between February and May. It’s not uncommon to encounter four or five different shark species on a single dive. To participate in this adventure, divers should be Advanced level with at least 35 dives under their belt, and recent diving experience is encouraged. For those seeking close encounters with sharks, baited dives are offered – a truly remarkable opportunity for photographers.
