This dive site, known as Escull de Tortuga (Turtle Rock/Reef), is nestled in the crystal-clear waters of southern Menorca, between the picturesque coves of Cala Macarella and Cala Turqueta. Its name is derived from a distinctive rock formation near the surface that strikingly resembles a turtle's head emerging from its shell. This simple and shallow site is perfectly suited for beginners and student divers, offering easy navigation and a relaxed underwater experience without challenging currents or complex topography.
The site boasts a vibrant array of Mediterranean marine life, including groupers, curious scorpionfish, elusive octopuses, and various moray eels hidden within the rocks. During the low season, divers are often treated to the sight of schooling barracudas and the beautiful Mediterranean Cassiopeia, also known as the fried egg jellyfish, adding a unique touch to the underwater encounters.
The best time to visit is during the low season to witness the schools of barracudas and the distinctive fried egg jellyfish. Escull de Tortuga offers an excellent opportunity for both novice divers to gain confidence and for experienced divers to enjoy a calm, scenic dive, making it a great spot for underwater photography, particularly for macro subjects and unique rock formations.
