This dive site, Grönhögen Stenbrott (also known as Grönhögens kalkbrott), is a captivating former limestone quarry located on southern Öland, Sweden. Transformed into a popular spot for both swimming and Scuba diving, it offers divers a unique underwater landscape featuring azure-colored water and various submerged structures derived from its quarry past. Navigation within the quarry is generally straightforward, following the natural rock formations and quarry walls.
The clear waters of Grönhögen Stenbrott attract a variety of smaller aquatic life, predominantly including small fish and amphibians. While not a location for large marine animals, the quarry's ecosystem provides interesting subjects for observation. Above the surface, common birds like seagulls and herons are frequently seen frequenting the area.
The best time to visit Grönhögen Stenbrott for diving is during the warmer months, typically from late spring through early autumn, when water temperatures are more comfortable. Its maximum depth of 12 meters and excellent visibility make it an ideal location for beginner divers, open water training, and recreational freediving. The distinctive underwater landscape also offers good opportunities for underwater landscape photography.
