This dive site, known as Högsma Stenbrott or Björkeröd quarry, is an old Diabas quarry measuring approximately 25x150 meters with a total depth of 55 meters, though recreational diving typically goes to a maximum of 25 meters. Its dark stone absorbs light quickly, making depths below 20 meters quite dim. Divers should be cautious of the iron grids lining the sides, which act as collapse barriers, and avoid swimming between them. What makes this site particularly unique is the well-preserved submerged vegetation, including trees, branches, and bushes, creating an eerie, forest-like underwater landscape.
The marine life here consists primarily of freshwater species such as Perch and Crayfish, which can be observed navigating the unique underwater environment. The site's distinct character comes from the extensive vegetation, including entire trees and bushes that remain intact, providing shelter and a striking visual backdrop for these creatures.
The best time to visit Högsma Stenbrott is generally during warmer months when surface temperatures are more pleasant, although the water temperature at depth will remain consistently cool. Divers should be prepared for low light conditions below 20 meters and carry appropriate lighting. Both scuba divers and freedivers can appreciate the unique submerged forest, with freedivers able to explore the shallower to mid-depths.
