About this dive site

This dive site presents the wreck of the Tysk ångare, a 89-meter long iron steamship loaded with iron ore on its way from Sweden to Germany. The vessel tragically sank south of Dalarö on July 31st, 1917, following a collision with the Swedish steamship Bergsvik in foggy conditions. Twenty-one men perished along with the ship. A key factor contributing to the disaster is believed to be insufficient fuel for the lanterns, which were reportedly not even lit until the Bergsvik was sighted – an apparently illogical sequence of events. Had adequate light been maintained, the collision may have been avoided. The decision by Ingrid Horn to navigate within the islands was driven by a need to avoid mines present in the outer archipelago during wartime. Extensive mining operations had occurred throughout the Baltic Sea region for many years. This wreck remains a poignant reminder of maritime disaster and highlights the dangers of navigating in challenging conditions.
