About this dive site

This dive site, known as "Captain Mike’s", is a renowned local reef located near Jupiter Dive Center. The site features a prominent high ledge, averaging 15 to 20 feet in height from the sandy bottom. Divers typically begin their descent on this ledge, approximately 75 feet above the seabed, where they find an area teeming with colorful fish. As divers navigate north along the ledge’s curve, they often encounter curious reef sharks. A bend in the ledge leads further north, potentially offering encounters with Spotted Eagle rays flying south, or enormous Southern rays resting on the seafloor. During January and February, Lemon Sharks may be observed basking on the ledge. Approximately 150 feet north of the initial ledge section lies a westward-jutting point, home to “Tug,” a massive Goliath grouper – a shy creature best approached with caution. Late summer brings an aggregation of goliath groupers to this area, sometimes numbering up to ten individuals, as they prepare for spawning. Loggerhead, Green, and Hawksbill turtles are regularly seen along the ledge, particularly the smaller Hawksbills who enjoy foraging on sponges. Large Green moray eels reside in crevices below the ledge, frequently venturing into open water. Towards the end of dives, experienced divers with longer bottom times may spot a second reef shark neighborhood – typically four to six individuals observing the passing traffic. "Captain Mike’s" offers an exceptional diversity of marine life, earning it recognition as a world-class dive destination.
