About this dive site

This dive site, known as Tunnels, offers a spectacular and consistently rewarding experience. Located in an area renowned for its abundant marine life, divers can expect to encounter large animals relatively early in the descent. Immediately upon entering the first tunnel, Reef sharks often greet newcomers, creating a quick and memorable introduction to the site. Spear fishermen should exercise caution, as the area is heavily guarded by these sharks. For sightseers, the greeting is swift, while divers may observe three to five Goliath groupers slowly moving west along the sand floor – the slower their pace, the more likely they are to get a close-up view of these impressive creatures. Moving north along the ledge frequently leads to encounters with schools of Atlantic spadefish; these fish are remarkably tolerant and can be observed swimming through the school, showcasing their unique human-like faces. Look occasionally westward from the ledge for enormous Southern rays buried in the sand, often identified by the visibility of only their eyes. Cobia may be spotted near the rays, patiently awaiting a meal. Loggerhead, Green, and Hawksbill turtles are commonly found on the ledge or resting beneath it. Twenty-five minutes into the dive, under a substantial ledge, Goliath groupers—particularly abundant in late summer—often gaze directly at divers exploring the cave-like darkness; a light is recommended for this encounter. Finally, if moderate currents prevail, divers can reach the Donut Hole section of Tunnels. This area consistently features Reef sharks, sometimes napping within the hole or cruising eastward. Goliath groupers frequently hide under small ledges, while Nurse sharks are well-acquainted with the spot. Loggerhead turtles may find refuge here, often alongside a Reef shark or Nurse shark. Gag and Black groupers also hunt in this region. The Donut Hole represents a phenomenal conclusion to an unparalleled dive.
