About this dive site
This dive site is located at Birchy Head, a secluded area accessible via the 103 and 329 highways. It’s suitable for divers of varying skill levels, from open water to technical experts. The area offers depths up to 230 feet (70.1 meters), though the reef only extends to approximately 45-55 feet (13.72 - 16.76 meters). Open water divers can enjoy dives at around 60 feet (18.29 meters), while advanced divers explore depths of 100 feet (30.48 meters) for SAC rate practice or fin cycling exercises. The entry and exit to Birchy Head present a challenge, requiring a steep descent down a rocky slope – two options exist: navigating a rope-assisted path on the right or descending a rock slope with a crack leading to the water. The beach itself consists of rounded stones, creating a tripping hazard; therefore, caution is advised, especially during windy conditions when waves can be substantial. Visibility generally ranges from 20 to 25 feet (6.1 to 7.62 meters). The bottom composition includes a rocky seabed with boulders and ledges, offering diverse marine life. There are three distinct directions for exploration—straight out to maximum depth, left towards shallower areas, or right along a ledge reaching up to 90 feet (27.43 meters). Be aware of potential currents, both surface and bottom. During lobster season, watch for lobster traps and buoys. Emergency contact information includes Dickson Building of The Victoria General at (473-7998), Police and Ambulance (911), DAN 1-919-684-4DAN (4326), QE II Hospital (473 -2220) and Marine Radio VHF Channel 16. Please keep the dive site clean.
