About this dive site
This dive site, known as Barrel Sponge Wall, is a unique location famed for its impressive Giant Barrel Sponges. These sponges thrive in north-facing areas and can be found clustered around the site, with an estimated 17 massive specimens, each over 15 years old. Divers often observe these sponges filtering water through their chimneys—a fascinating process that some even document using non-toxic dyes to visualize. The area features tall, sloping buttresses descending towards a sandy bottom, providing ample space for exploration and offering stunning views of the marine environment. Water clarity is exceptional, creating opportunities for peaceful hovering and appreciating the surrounding scenery. Watching fellow divers against the fading blue backdrop adds to the experience’s sense of scale and beauty. Please note that climbing into the sponges is strictly prohibited.
