About this dive site

This dive site, Secca del Turco, is a prominent shoal off the coast of Capraia Island, Italy. It's characterized by a sloping descent from 27 meters to depths exceeding 50 meters, though divers typically stay within the shallower 33-meter limit. Navigation is relatively straightforward, following the natural contours of the shoal. The site's name, 'Turkish Shoal,' likely hints at historical maritime activity in the area, but specific historical details are scarce.

Marine life is exceptionally rich and diverse. Large groupers are a highlight, frequently seen near the rocky structure. Schools of barracuda patrol the waters, along with abundant snappers and various other species of fish. While coral might not be the defining feature, the rocky formations provide plenty of habitat for a wide array of species. The abundance of fish provides excellent opportunities for both macro and wide-angle photography.

The best time to visit Secca del Turco is during the summer months (June-September) when water temperatures are warmer and visibility is typically at its best. Divers should be aware of potential moderate currents, and proper buoyancy control is essential to navigate the site safely. Freediving is not recommended at this depth due to the significant depth and potential for currents. Good experience with diving and handling moderate currents is recommended.
