About this dive site
This dive site is located in Dwejra on the west coast of Gozo, a large open cavern known as Coral Cave. It’s a popular location with an average depth of 20 meters and a maximum depth of 30 meters, requiring advanced diving qualifications. The entrance to the cave starts at approximately 17-18 meters below the surface and descends to the seabed around 28-30 meters. The cavern stretches inwards about 50-60 meters, offering a spacious environment illuminated by natural light even in its deeper recesses. The floor is primarily sand and silt, sloping upwards to meet the ceiling at roughly 21 meters. What truly distinguishes Coral Cave are the abundant corals covering almost every surface – walls, ceiling, and floor. These corals are remarkably fragile; divers should exercise extreme caution, avoiding contact and minimizing their time underwater due to the potential for bubble formation that can damage the delicate ecosystem. The cavern’s back wall contains a hole, which is best accessed by experienced cave divers with appropriate training. Historically, there have been incidents of diver fatalities in this area, particularly when silt is stirred up, hindering visibility. This makes navigation challenging and highlights the need for careful planning and execution.
