About this dive site
This dive site, Hondoq Bay, is a shallow and sheltered bay located on the southeast coast of Gozo, Malta. It's a popular spot for introductory dives and training courses due to its calm waters and easily navigable terrain. The dive site features a sandy bottom with various interesting features such as a water pipeline, arches to the east, and a hidden inlet with a small cave to the west. The relatively shallow depth makes it accessible to divers of all experience levels, although strong swimming skills are advised for exploring the eastern arches and the western cave inlet.
The marine life in Hondoq Bay is abundant despite the site’s shallow nature. Divers can expect to encounter a variety of creatures including octopuses, cuttlefish, lizardfish, flatfish, flying gurnards, small crabs, and blennies. The sandy bottom provides excellent hunting grounds for these animals, and careful observation will reward divers with numerous sightings. In the shallows, the presence of small crabs and blennies make this site perfect for macro photographers.
Hondoq Bay is suitable for diving throughout the year, although visibility may be better during the warmer months (May-October). The shallow depths make it ideal for both scuba diving and freediving. For freediving, it is highly recommended to maintain visual contact with the surface and respect the depth limits to ensure safety. Always dive with a buddy, especially when exploring the more complex features of the site, and make sure to check weather conditions and water visibility before your dive. It's advisable to carry a dive light for exploring the small cave to increase visibility.
