About this dive site
This dive site, Fort Frederic, is a vibrant coral reef located a convenient 15-minute boat ride from Uppuveli Beach in Sri Lanka. It offers a varied underwater landscape consisting of corals, stones, and sandy areas. As a relatively shallow site with a maximum depth of 18 meters and an average of 9 meters, it serves as an excellent progression for divers who have recently completed their Open Water course, allowing them to comfortably gain experience with depth. There is no specific historical narrative associated with the dive site beyond its natural reef formation near the fort.
The marine life at Fort Frederic is quite active, with sightings of numerous snappers, various species of rays, and moray eels commonly reported. The healthy coral structures provide shelter and foraging grounds for these animals. However, divers should be aware of the presence of fishing nets, which can unfortunately impact the local marine ecosystem.
The best time to visit Fort Frederic for optimal diving conditions is typically during the dry season for Sri Lanka's east coast, from April to September, when sea conditions are calmer and visibility tends to be at its best. This site is highly recommended for recreational divers looking for a relaxing and rewarding experience, and its manageable depths also make it suitable for freedivers keen on exploring the reef on a single breath.
